A Typical Day with your Texas and Oklahoma fishing guide Carey Thorn
A day with fishing guide Carey Thorn on Rowlett Creek end of April 2009

"I met Carey Thorn for the first time on Rowlett Creek Texas late in April 2009.  I had read about his guided fishing trips to Rowlett Creek on a large Texas fishing forum, and had to see for myself if the size and numbers of fish were true, or if there was a bit of the standard angler's exaggeration involved.

We met at 6:00am, shook hands, and headed toward the creek.  I was immediately impressed by Carey's professional demeanor, but more so by the focused "fire" in his eyes.  This guy had been a fishing guide for the better part of a decade on this water...  and still was thrilled to be hitting it again!

I realized just what the day held, when Carey grabbed his castnet, put one end between his teeth, tossed it perfectly...  and pulled in several dozen shad!  Carey requires that he set up your rod, even if you are an accomplished angler.  Yes, you use your own rod, but the setup is all Carey's baby.  We started with a simple shad under a bobber, and immediately were into lots of sand bass.  Action was constant, even though the rumors were that the run up Rowlett Creek was over.

While we fished I asked all sorts of questions, trying to learn as much as possible about catching fish on the creek, but also to get a feel for what Carey "was all about".  Part of the discussion centered around other techniques and baits that worked for sand bass and hybrids on Rowlett Creek.  Frankly I was more in the mood for tossing artificials, and Carey must have read that, because after slamming dozens of nice sand bass, we began to explore other holes on the creek, and Carey continually changed our setups to different artificial lures.  Every single method resulted in numbers of fish.

We weren't going to keep fish, but with an hour or so remaining in our day, Carey remembered that some neighborhood kids always came running when he pulled up in his truck after a day on the water, hoping to bring home a bunch of fish for their dinner.  During that next 60 minutes that stringer filled with beautiful sand bass for these kids.

It was a wonderful day spent with an excellent guide, and a good man to boot.  We caught well over 100 hard fighting sand bass and hybrids!  I strongly recommend Carey Thorn Texas and Oklahoma fishing guide extraordinaire!!!"
